Petrobras announced in a press statement that it has begun production from the Cascade field, off the U.S. Gulf of Mexico coast. The well, named Cascade 4, is located at a depth of 2,500 meters and is considered to be in ultra-deep waters. According to the State-owned company, the platform vessel BW Pioneer is the first of its kind (FPSO) to produce oil in the region. The BW Pioneer is capable of processing 80,000 barrels of oil and 500,000 cubic meters of gas per day. It has a storage capacity of 500,000 barrels. According to the Petrobras statement, the platform is a pioneer in the region with regard to the technologies used. The well is connected to the vessel by subsea lines and risers (the pipes that carry oil from the well to the ship) that are self-supporting. Oil is transported to the mainland by means of ship and gas is carried via pipelines. The Cascade field is 250 kilometers off the coast of the U.S. State of Louisiana.
